Dual Diagnosis and Addiction

Many people suffering from a substance use disorder (SUD) also suffer from a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral disorder. This is known as a dual diagnosis. Patients with a dual diagnosis need an integrated recovery plan that deals with both ailments as linked mental health issues.

Prevalent mental health disorders associated with drug abuse include the list below:

  • ADHD – Many individuals are prescribed adderall to treat their ADHD, which may be habit-forming and lead to a toxic habit of substance abuse.
Depression – Some individuals diagnosed with depression try to self-medicate with illegal drugs or alcohol. This frequently makes the mental state even worse. The come-down after the high can be devastating for those with a pre-existing depressive condition.
  • Bipolar Disorder – Nearly one-half of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder also deal with addiction. Just like any other mental health disorder, it can be tempting to self-medicate. Drugs and alcohol provide a source of short-lived relief from emotional situations and manic incidents for individuals with bipolar.
  • PTSD – When a person develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain generates fewer endorphins than a healthy brain, making them more likely to seek the help of alcohol or drugs to feel happy.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder – Studies have discovered that addiction and borderline personality disorder
  • (BPD) oftentimes happen together. More than two-thirds of those with BPD have turned toward drug abuse at some point in their lives.
  • OCD – Individuals with OCD often struggle with anxiety and depression because of their uncontrolled conduct, which can result in drug abuse.
  • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often originate from powerful thoughts of inferiority. Stimulants that decrease appetite are especially common among individuals struggling with these disorders.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most typical mental disorder in the U.S., generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) affects 18 percent of all adults. Individuals who deal with GAD may be more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol to deal with their issues. People may also abuse benzodiazepines, which are highly addictive pharmaceutical medications used to manage anxiety disorders.
  • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is identified by hallucinations and delusional thinking. Identifying schizophrenia along with an addiction can be puzzling because both conditions share the same effects.

Drug and Psychological Dependence

Most people or references that talk about psychological dependence are referring to the cognitive and emotional aspects of addictive actions or the withdrawal period from narcotics or alcohol instead of attempting to categorize certain substances or activities as being psychologically addictive or physically addictive. The symptoms associated with the psychological aspects of addictive behaviors or with psychological addiction are generally described as:

  • Cravings
  • Complications with anxiety that happen when someone makes an effort to quit their addictive conduct
