What is the Dual Diagnosis and Addiction?

Many individuals suffering from a substance use disorder (SUD) also live with a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral health. This is referred to as a dual diagnosis. Patients with a dual diagnosis need an integrated recovery program that attends to both ailments as linked mental health issues.

Prevalent mental health disorders identified with drug and alcohol abuse consist of the following:

  • ADHD – Many individuals are given stimulants to treat their ADHD, which may be habit-forming and create a dangerous pattern of chemical abuse.
Depression – Many people suffering from depression try to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. This often times makes the disorder even worse. The crash after the high can be terrible for those with a pre-existing depressive issue.
  • Bipolar Disorder – Nearly fifty percent of people with bipolar disorder also deal with addiction. Just like any other mental health disorder, it can be appealing to self-medicate. Alcohol and drugs offer a moment of temporary relief from emotional situations and manic episodes for people with bipolar.
  • PTSD – When someone develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain creates less endorphins than a healthy brain, making them more likely to turn to alcohol or drugs to feel happy.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder – Studies have suggested that drug addiction and borderline personality disorder
  • (BPD) in many cases materialize together. Over two-thirds of those with BPD have turned toward substance abuse at some time in their lives.
  • OCD – Persons with OCD often deal with anxiety and depression as a result of their compulsory tendencies, which can turn them to drugs or alcohol.
  • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often stem from strong perceptions of inferiority. Stimulants that eliminate hunger are especially prevalent among people struggling with these disorders.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most common mental condition in the USA, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) affects eighteen percent of adults. People who experience GAD may be more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol to manage their symptoms. People may also use benzodiazepines, which are very addictive pharmaceutical medications prescribed to manage anxiety problems.
  • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is characterized by hallucinations and delusional thinking. Identifying schizophrenia along with an addiction can be challenging because both conditions create the same behavior.

Drug and Psychological Dependence

Most people or materials that talk about mental addiction are referring to the cognitive and emotional facets of addictive habits or the withdrawal process from narcotics or alcohol as opposed to attempting to categorize specific drugs or activities as being mentally addictive or physically addictive. The conditions associated with the psychological elements of addictive behaviors or with psychological dependence are commonly described as:
